Q&A: What is the best coffee to drink black?
Question by Shining: What is the best coffee to drink black?
I’m not a coffee drinker, in fact I hate coffee. So what is the best brand/type of coffee to drink if I’m planning on drinking it black without any creamer or added sugar?
I’ve tried Starbucks Espresso Roast in “bold” and it tastes really nasty and makes me feel like vomiting.
Oh and what does bold, medium, mild or whatever mean?

You need “Kopi Luwak” coffee …………. up to $ 600 per pound and made from beans that have been eaten, then crapped out by civets.
It’s supposed to be the best, and smoothest coffee in the world because the civets only eat the best beans, and have an enzyme in their stomach that changes the flavour of the beans

Green Mountain Coffee
The roast time determines the “boldness” of the coffee. Longer time = darker beans = less oil = less flavor, more burnt taste. I prefer a medium roasted, single origin, arabica bean. Stay away from mass market supermarket blends. Buy fresh roasted whole beans and grind them yourself if possible.
Maxwell house is pretty good, I first started on that, not exactly bitter, a bit but not much, depending on potency. Bold, medium, and mild means how much grounds they put in.
If you hate coffee…don’t drink it black. Almost all plain black coffee will suck for you.
Think of bold as it’s strength? Bold will be pretty strong in flavor, while mild will obviously be the lightest. I like coffee, but I still don’t drink it black. I’ll add some sugar, and occasionally milk.
Sod starbucks, it’s overpriced overhyped sludge. Yes, they probably made very good coffee when they were a chain of 100 or 200 thousand stores, but they’re too far gone to expect good coffee from any one of their 500 million locations.
First off, if you don’t like coffee, espresso is the wrong direction. You want an “americano”, that’s an italian term used in swank joints meaning “overpriced plain old coffee”.
If you are not making it yourself, but buying from an american chain, both McDonalds and Burger King serve excellent black coffee at the moment that is consistent from store to store (get a small- anything else is bucket-o-joe sized). You won’t win any fashion points, but it is good coffee. Dunkin Donuts sometimes have good coffee, sometimes not. As a chain they are not good at keeping their machine temps calibrated.
If you are making it yourself, then good coffee is in the making not in the buying of a brand. You want fresh ground from whole beans (nothing fancy or expensive, plain old arabica beans). You want a coffee pot that is all glass or stainless steel (no plastic or aluminum). Do not use a crap plastic Mr. Coffee marker type deal. Get a cheap yard sale vacuum pot or percolator. The water should approach boiling but not actually boil- this is how you avoid bitter coffee. You want to throw away any coffee that is not consumed in an hour or so- the oils oxidize quickly and cause bitter tatses. High temps and old coffee are why 90% of the coffee sold in stores and restaurants tastes awful.
Visually, good black coffee should be dark (shouldn’t be able to see the bottom of the mug) and should have bubbles at the edge that don’t pop right away. It should smell wonderful and ultimately the taste should deliver on the aroma’s promise. It should not taste bitter, it should taste rich and deeply complex and have a smooth mouth feel. There should be an enjoyable aftertaste that lingers for some time after you finish that speaks of the notes released from the beans during the making of the coffee; carmel, dark chocolate, vanillans, herbal notes- all dependent upon the beans and how they were treated.
Good luck and enjoy.
You hate coffee and you plan on drinking it? I assume you want the stimulant effect of the caffeine. I suggest that you drink tea instead.
If you really want to drink coffee and have this disgust issue, try varietals that are lower in acidity. Good Colombian coffee and Sumatran coffee are typically lower in acidity.
Bold is just a branding term. Coffee is categorized by degree of roast. Light roasts have higher acidity, more delicate flavor and also more caffeine. Medium is less acidic but it doesn’t have the smoky taste of dark roasts. Dark roast coffee is almost burnt. Starbucks has a lot of coffee that is dark roasted and the burnt taste might be what bothers you. I used to roast coffee for a living. When drinking coffee black, I preferred Colombian medium roast.
I like Cafe Britt coffee. However, you have to order it by phone or online. They also have other gourmet chocolates and nuts. I love coffee! Here is the number 877-686-4494
